Tallow provides saturated fats that produce a hard bar and moisturizing qualities, while lye (sodium hydroxide) reacts with the fats to create a saponified product. Activated Charcoal – Charcoal has a huge surface area and is highly adsorptive. It binds toxins, heavy metals, and smoke particles on contact. When you wash with it, it physically lifts the particulate matter and pollutants off your skin rather than just smearing them around. That’s why it’s effective for firemen exposed to soot, smoke, and other airborne chemicals.
